I foresee a beach day soon…last weekend, Mason caught some shrimp and a little fish (with his bare hands!). Tonight during dinner, he proclaimed that he would bring a fishing pole and catch a stingray next time we go to the beach. Whatever happened to just collecting shells and building sand castles?

Mason’s sketch: one of the characters from Castle Crashers?

I thought last week was busy with painting and wedding deadlines, but this short week (because of the holiday on Monday) is pretty jam-packed, so I didn’t have a chance to post my sketch from yesterday.

7.6.11: Today’s sketch is of some tile designs. This summer, my husband and I are hoping to complete the hand-painted stair rise tile project we started over six years ago. He’s had all the travertine tiles mounted to the Hardibacker boards (perfectly cut to fit the face of each stair riser) for years now.  We just haven’t had the time to finalize the designs that I’ll hand-paint onto the tiles…and we haven’t really been able to agree on them either. We go back and forth between a very ornate and structured look of Italian tiles, and a more painterly and casual look of Spanish/Portuguese or Mexican tiles. Once we agree on the four designs, we’ll need to figure out the color scheme for each tile. I want it to be colorful, detailed and obviously hand-painted…and not stenciled. But we don’t want it to be over-the-top and too busy. These designs are referenced from a specialty tile manufacturer that many of my clients (and their interior designers) have purchased from: California Pottery and Tile Works. They have a really cool feature on their website where you can “paint” the tile designs to create custom colorways. This will certainly come in handy for helping us plan out this project.

7.5.11: Yesterday’s sketch was done really quickly, while waiting in the car (um, I think in a drive-thru) during some of my many errands for a few weddings next week. Aaron and I have been discussing some home improvement and decorating projects and the topic of our kitchen has come up a few times, especially as some of our appliances are nearing the point of needing to be replaced. I’ll do a more comprehensive sketch of it some other time, but here’s what we’d like to do (when/if  time, money and resources will allow):

1. Darkening the cabinets to a rich walnut or even espresso (the reddish-orange-brown “cherry” stain we chose ten years ago feels dated)

2. Building additional small cabinets and shelves above the existing cabinets, creating functional hidden features and storage/organization within the cabinets

3. Adding in some decorative grates to some of the cabinet doors

4. Replacing the counter-tops with a creamy marble or limestone

5. Completely tiling the back splash

Of course, a huge farmhouse sink (hammered copper perhaps), faux stone or cast plaster hood above the range, all new appliances, and a cream colored island (crafted from an old dresser or table, with a butcher block top) are part of the plan too.

For number 5: the tile back splash…we originally thought of subway tile. But I think it’s become too popular and I wonder if it’ll look too common and overdone…not really “us”. I’ve always been drawn to Gothic and Medieval art and architecture…and would love to have windows and doorways with a Gothic arch…featuring the iconic quatrefoil symbol. So I thought some sort of quatrefoil-shaped tile in a creamy bisque would be interesting. Quatrefoil means “four-leaves”, which I kinda like since it could represent our family of four.

One of the things I love about this 365 project, is that my sketchbook has become a journal or diary of sorts. How often would I be able to pause and reflect on the day, what I did, what I was thinking about, how I was feeling…if I weren’t committed to taking a moment to sketch something (and post about it) every day? Flipping through the sketchbooks and reading the blog entries, I am reminded of moments in my life – whether it’s personal or work-related, exciting occasions or even the somewhat mundane day-to-day occurrences, it is still a snapshot of my life, nonetheless.

Today I took a break from design proofs, client correspondence, project planning and all the work-related tasks associated with running my own business (seven days a week)…to enjoy the long weekend with my family, friends and neighbors. I meant to post this from my iphone on the beach…and vowed not to even turn on my computer…but we ended up getting home a little earlier than planned…and since I always tend to write little novellas, I thought it would be easier to post from my laptop.

A few years ago, we were invited by our friends, Tina and Dennis, to be a part of their July 3rd tradition of staking out a spot at Bahia Point, spending the whole day with our families at the beach, and waiting for the breathtaking fireworks display right above us in the bay. It was so much fun…now many of our friends and neighbors look forward to the annual event…it’s quite the party! This year, the fireworks were cancelled a couple of days before….which was a bummer since the whole point of securing a spot early in the morning, is to get the best waterfront view of the fireworks (since the barge where the fireworks are launched is right there in the bay). But the whole day was still wonderful and everyone had a great time.

Today’s sketch was done while chatting with my friends and relaxing in a lawn chair, sipping on my husband’s now-famous “watermelon-juice” concoction and enjoying an amazing spread of delicious goodies.

Daddy and Isaac on a leisurely kayak ride.
Shuggie looks relaxed.
All the neighborhood kiddos having a blast.
Yay for red, white and blue sprinkles on frosted sugar cookies!

We barely saw Mason today, he was having such a great time with his buddies and looking for creatures. He found some shrimp and caught a little fish with his bare hands.

Wouldn’t it be fun to have a cute set of illustrated stationery or calling cards depicting the family? I think so…here’s a quick little watercolor (and ink) doodle of me and mine (not including our two toads and five fish). Hmmmm, I’m thinking portraits of my fave families, pets included…would make adorable gifts.

Whoa…how is it July already?  It’s been a super busy year and time is just flying by like crazy. I’m in the middle of a big deadline, assembling items for a wedding this weekend, but here’s a quick doodle break.  Now I gotta get back to work….

When I was pregnant with Isaac (over five years ago), before I knew we were having a boy, I did some research on names and came across this quote by French writer Émile Zola. If we had a girl, we were planning on naming her “Zola”…so I was curious about the meaning and of any historical figures with that name. I originally got the name from Zola Budd, the Olympic runner who twice broke the world record in the 5,000 meters, and was famous for running barefoot. As a former long distance and cross country runner in high school and college, I admired Zola Budd…and I’ve always liked “Z” names. Besides Zola Budd, Ã‰mile Zola was the only other name that came up in my searches…and that’s how I found this quote that I’ve sketched today.

The quote resonated with me…and since then, I’ve kept it in my “back pocket” of sorts…a motivational, yet humbling reminder of what I do and why.

I’ve been asked to do a mural in a client’s living room of a Guidonian Hand, which I’m really excited about!  It’s something so different…and I haven’t painted anything like this before. I’m thrilled to have clients with such unique tastes and who are willing to do something so intriguing and bold (and out of the norm)…we’re talking a huge painting of a hand, smack-dab in the middle of their living room wall!
I’m familiar with the imagery (vaguely recall seeing it in some Medieval and religious artwork from art history classes or museum tours), but until this evening I did not know that it was called the Guidonian Hand…or why…or what it represents.
Now that I know, it makes me appreciate the image (and the project) even more. You can actually find murals of this diagram in some Spanish Missions (here in California and throughout the U.S.), the “visual mnemonic device” was used to teach those who could not read music to “sight-sing.” Very interesting!
So here’s today’s sketch, referenced from the “Franciscan Guide for Novices, 1725” found via Texas Tech University’s Special Collections Library. P.S. I tried posting this last night, but blogger was having issues.

And for today’s kiddo sketch, “Waterfalls” by Mason.

My boys love going on nature hikes and looking for little critters…they are fascinated by how they look and move, what they eat and especially how some of them “transform”. Their favorites are tadpoles and caterpillars. A few of weeks ago, they came home with a mason jar full of tadpoles…eager to see them grow legs and turn into frogs.  We have two healthy pet toads (Jelly and Belly) that started as big tadpoles from Petco (over a year ago when Mason lost his first tooth, he decided he wanted to use his tooth fairy money to buy tadpoles as pets…who knew they’d do so well and we’d now have toads)

Yesterday, the boys came home with the prettiest caterpillar I’ve seen around here. Usually, we get the fuzzy, black spiky or black/orange variety…still very pretty and it’s amazing to see them go through metamorphosis. But this one was different…green and black with bright yellow spots, looks like a Swallowtail, perhaps?

And speaking of “transforming”….the boys (yes, Daddy included) and I are SUPER excited to see Transformers 3…hopefully tomorrow if I can get all my work done in time to catch a matinee.
